Why Are Bees Dying Along Beaches

by Olwen O'Herlihy
(Malibu)

Why do bees die along the sandy beaches along the wave and water line??

I notice them whenever I go for a walk on the beach in Malibu CA and Sarasota FL.

Thanks

Hi Olwen

I'm not absolutely sure, it's possible that they have flown too far out to sea and drowned, getting washed up on the shore later.

Perhaps a more likely explanation is that when bees collect water to take back to their hive for cooling purposes. (They evaporate droplets of water inside the hive, cooling their hive down in exactly the same way as an old fashioned swamp cooler cools down a house.) They often drown, even in relatively small containers which beekeepers use to provide them with water. It's usual to put pieces of wood or polystyrene for them to land on.

The water on a beach would attract bees, but they probably aren't prepared for even the small ripples and waves which occur at the water line, getting wet and unable to fly, subsequently drowning.

Bees Dying on the Beach

by Linda
(Ventura, CA)

Hello! Any notion as to why bees go to the ocean shore to die? I have seen them crawling around on the waters edge and get drowned. One stung my poor granddaughter on the foot.

Sometimes I have seen disoriented bees crawling around in my yard before sundown when they should have returned to their hives. I suppose they may have been sprayed with pesticide somewhere. I just wonder if anyone would want to examine these bees when discovered?

Thank you! - Linda, Ventura CA

I think the bees aren't expecting the waves when they go to the beach to collect water.

As for the bees dying in your yard , I think it's quite possible that they have encountered some insecticide nearby. Some people seem unable to see a tiny creature without reaching for a spray can.
