Why Build a Website When You're a Beekeeper?

Many people often ask me, "Why build a website?" I can understand that it does seem a little strange to go from being a computer programmer to a beekeeper to a website infopreneur?

As with so many things in life the answer is not totally straightforward. I'd been a computer programmer for a few years, and my contract ended. I thought, do I want to do this forever? The answer almost came before the question. I had a half-hearted looked for another contract programming assignment but I knew it wasn't really what I wanted.

It was the start of bee-season in San Diego and I started getting a few swarm calls. In many states most people charge to remove honeybee swarms. I could see an entirely different business developing.

When I want to look for information on something like, "types of wasp" "homemade wasp trap" "how do bees make honey" or "build a beehive" I turn to the internet along with over one and a half billion other people around the world. There's over 100 million active websites on the internet and thousands more are added every day.

Somehow I needed to increase the number of calls I was getting, so being a programmer I decided a website would be the way to get my message out there to people who had a bee problem and are looking for ideas and solutions. Don't get me wrong, I still use the Yellow Pages, but I use it to light my smoker before I open up a hive of bees. For more information about building your own website click here.

Certainly in the United States the concept of using the internet to find things locally has increased enormously. I recently need to replace a part for a sliding closet door. I did actually try a couple of local hardware places, but none of them had anything suitable. In fact a guy in Lowes Home Improvement Center suggested I do a search on the internet for sliding mirror closet doors to find someone who specializes in such things.

I dusted off my web skills and built a few pages giving information about bee removal. www.SanDiegoBees.com was born. I used Google Adwords to drive traffic to the site so people who were looking for bee removal locally could find me. There were quite a number of customers who desperately wanted to help honeybees, partly because of the publicity concerning Colony Collapse Disorder and partly because many people hate to kill things.

Business increased and I tried to improve my website to give more information about bees. Somewhere I came across SBI, a whole different way to build a website, a whole different approach. Why build a website when you can build an SBI website? It's very exciting and inspiring to look at the extremely diverse reasons people have for creating a website. If you have a preconception about the sort of people that put up websites take a look here, you'll be surprised.

I redesigned my site from the ground up and the result is what you see before you. It's something I love to do, it's never finished, I keep adding to it all the time. I see the statistics of visitors from about 154 countries over the last year. I log on to my Google Analytics page almost daily to see how any visitors there have been and where they've come from. Often it's not only from cities I've never heard of, there are counties I've never heard of, that's pretty exciting, that's "why build a website?". Of course the bottom line is thatthe site was build to make a profit. One of the brest ways to do this is by affiliate marketing. Vendors like Amazon and eBay have affiliate programs which pay commission for sales made from traffic directed from other websites, such as this one.

Most of my visitors are from the United States, but I sometimes imagine a person sitting at a computer in Pretoria, Sydney, Dubayy or Beijing and it makes me feel I've done something worthwhile. I can see which pages are the most visited and how long someone stayed on the site. This helps me to improve my content which in turn attracts yet more visitors.

Thousands of people around the world, people just like you, have read what I've written. They've looked at the photos I've taken and watched my videos. I compiled a list of beekeepers in the U.S. who are available to remove honeybee swarms. I list Bee Associations and Clubs in almost all states. I think that the single most useful thing that a new beekeeper can do, when he's starting out, is to make contact with other beekeepers. I help this to happen. I think you're seeing why build a website?

If you're reading this from a far flung place and would like to tell me about your experience with bees, please click on this link and tell me all about it, I'd love to hear these stories and I love to share them with my visitors.

There are many people who have found SBI and followed their passion, why build a website? Here's just one reason from someone who did, click on the image below to watch the video.
