Are Honey Bees Really Disappearing?
by: Andy from upstate NY

Hay I have not seen any honey bees at all this year in my clover or any other flowers we have and we live in farmland.

Since we lived here we have always been flooded with honey bees. I can't beleave it, do you think that there may be cause for concern? Can't even find one in my little 2.5 acres of land.

Andy from NY.

Honey Bees are disapeering
by: Anonymous

I can attest that at least here in mid Northern Michigan, there is a absence of honey bees big time.

I have a dozen apple trees out there and after much searching I can honestly say I haven't found one single Honey Bee this year.

I have watched their population dwindle over the years but this is ridicules, I mean not one!!! Lots of bumble bees and other stinging, flying critters, but not one honey bee!

Winter and Honeybees
by: Anonymous

Hi - My Grandson found an old birdhouse like the ones they use at the area lakes and placed it high in our maple tree. Squirrels checked it out but decided against it.

Since then (early in the summer) the honeybees have taken it over. Now after using it all summer it looks like they are closing up the hole with wax and we aren't seeing very many (probably too cold). My question is: will they survive the winter up there? Anything we should do to preserve their hive?

[Hi Grandad

I don't think there's anything you can do at this stage to help them. If there's enough room, and there was enough forage to enable them to store honey they may survive the winter. Of course it depends to some extent on how cold the winter is, bees have been doing this for a very long time (although not in the US), I think you might be surprised.

The amazing thing about honeybees is that they don't hibernate like all other insects, they use the honey to generate heat to keep themselves warm all winter.
