Lifespan of a Honeybee
by: Barb

What is the lifespan of the drones and other female bees?

[In the first place, drones are male, all the worker bees are female.

The lifespan of a worker bee depends on the time of year and how hard she works. In the summer a worker may only live for about 6 weeks because she's collecting pollen and nectar so assiduously. Whereas in the winter when the bees have very little to do, they will live up to six months.

I'm not sure how long a typical drone will live. I would expect it to be longer than the worker. However once the fall arrives, and the drone is no longer required to mate with the queen, they're not fed by the workers, but are taken to the entrance of the hive, kicked out and not allowed to return.

The queen may live as long as 3 or 4 four years.
