Treatment of Wounds With Honey - Amazing Results

Hi Geoff,

I love your site, I'll be spending time on it learning over the next year or so. I would like to learn how to keep bees as my life and time permits, a world without bees is in big trouble and I've been taking note over the last few years of the various threats being thrown at them from all aspects of modern society.

I had an eye opening experience with honey two years ago, my big Cleveland Bay Horse - KC - had a horrific injury to his back leg.

After the initial couple of weeks traditional medical treatment my Vet highly recommended the use of a specific honey - Jelly Bush Honey - to dress the wound. The results were nothing short of remarkable!

It took me a bit of searching before I found a reliable supplier, in southern New South Wales, Australia. I've been a devotee ever since! This wound had a particularly poor prognosis, however, today - 2 years later - it has a viable skin cover, it will never be a 'pretty' leg again but, it is a result that I honestly couldn't have achieved with any other product and, my Vet agrees!

I understand Jelly Bush Honey is similiar to the N.Z. Manuka honey, however, the enzymes I think are slightly different.

Keep up the good work, I've attached a photo of my big boy KC, unfortunately, I didn't take any before and after photos of his injury.

Just wasn't thinking properly at the time, I was just traumatised by the accident and what had happened to him.

Thanks for your email regarding our Jelly Bush Honey.

Firstly all honey has an active medicinal quality. Australian Jelly Bush has been found to contain a much higher medicinal quality than say Yellow Box. NZ manuka has a UMF (unique manuka factor) rating and all the manuka honey is lab tested.

The problem lies in a two fold issue. The rating factor is not recognised for any honey world wide except NZ manuka so Jelly Bush whilst being tested isn't recognised with a number per say. Also environmental factors play a part in the strength of Jelly Bush, and that can change year to year.

We have never had any complaints , and we sell alot of this honey. My husband and I use our Jelly Bush daily, our kids get it when they get sick/cuts etc. I have two elderly gentlemen who buy it for their legs (both quite ulcerated etc) and they are regular customers.

To be honest I have never had someone use it on their horse , to my knowledge, but Jelly Bush works as an antiseptic/antibacterial and anti-fungal and the principals of biology and the pathways for disease are not that different in any species.

You could talk to Dr Shona Blair, Honey Research Division at University Of Sydney.

I have the greatest amount of respect for her research, and I think she knows more than everyone else put together!!
