My Birdhouse grew a Beard Overnight!

The Bird Box with a Bee Beard.

Got up at 6am today, and it looked like my small birdhouse hanging in a bush in my backyard had grown a beard!

On closer examination, I saw that it is a swarm of honeybees, approx 8" long and covering half the birdhouse. I'm hoping they move on, but I have 3 nosy dogs that I am afraid to let out in the yard in the meantime, for fear of them getting stung.

Local beekeeping/removal sites have not been much help, and the word "Terminex" is unacceptable! Don't want to destroy the hive, just want it gone from my yard.

Any suggestions/contacts? I live in Tacoma, WA.

Hi Diana

The bees may move on, or they may move into the bird box, if they haven't already. Bees seem to like bird boxes, after all there isn't much difference between a bee hive and a bird box, except that the bird box is usually off the ground.

I'm so pleased you didn't opt for the exterminator option, it seems almost criminal to destroy a swarm of bees. I think it's so important that we protect our bees. Thank you!

I suggest you try contacting a local beekeeper or a bee club.

I hope that helps.
