Now might be a good time to read The Universal Disclaimer.

People have been fascinated by them for thousands of years. In fact beekeepers have been taking advantage of them in the wild for a very long time. I have been a 'beek' since about 1998 in a number of different places.

The European Honeybee Apis mellifera is a species of insect, Apis is Latin for "bee", and mellifera comes from the Latin meli- "honey" and ferre "to bear" - hence the scientific name means "honey-bearing-bee".

The name Apis mellifera was coined in 1758 by Carolus Linnaeus. He later realized that they do not bear honey, but nectar, so tried to correct it to Apis mellifica ("honey-making") in a subsequent publication. However, according to the rules of synonymy in zoological nomenclature, the older name has precedence.

Beekeeping For Dummies?, 2nd Edition For a long time beekeeping was a hobby, but like so many hobbies it grew to be something more. I think I can safely say it has become my passion. Please explore this site and learn about this amazing insect. Who knows, beekeeping just might become your passion too. If you'd like to know the story of how and why the site came into being click here or on the Web Story menu button.

How and why they do what they do - The longer I'm involved with them the more I realize that they don't always do what they're 'supposed' to do, or what we expect.

What a swarm is - Most people have heard about swarms, but it's a fascinating process. Although incredible, it is sometimes alarming.

How to start beekeeping - Perhaps you've considered it before and thought it was too difficult or too scary, it needn't be either. I would advise you to read some books, then find an experienced beekeeper in your area and ask them if you can 'ride along'. Most people will be glad to show you the basics and help to get you started.

Find links to other bee and beekeeping resources - sources of information and advice, where to get supplies and equipment, perhaps even make your own.

Where to get - beekeeping supplies, beeswax products, pollen, local honey and even specific types of honey.
