If Walls Could Talk Instead of Just Buzzing

by Diana B
(Apopka, Florida)

I often wonder what is going inside the walls of the south side of my house. They certainly are all abuzz with activity. You see there was a small hole in the concrete block and some industrious honey bees decided it was a pretty good place to set up housekeeping.

The hive grew over the first year and we didn't think too much about them. They can't get into our part of the house and I certainly did not want to kill them or tear down my wall to get them out. Life went on.

It is now the second year of sharing our dwelling with the little ladies and they really have peaked my interest. I started a little container garden of veggies and herbs under their hive and the more I tended my garden the more my interest in the bees has grown.

I now want to start a "controlled" hive... one that I can enjoy some of the honey. I am reading as much as I can about them and plan to attend the monthly meeting of our local beekeepers' association. I also have a neighbor who keeps bees and am hoping they will be of help to me getting started.

There is a lot to learn before I actually start up my hive. So I had better get buzzy. :-)

That's great! Now is probably the best time of year to start, so jump in!

Before long you'll be as crazy as the rest of use. You'll have a hole cut in the sheet rock and a piece of glass fixed over it so you have a 'window on the hive'

Good luck!
