The Sage Continues
by: Barbara

Day 3 of feeding the bees-

A beautiful morning here in central Texas, temp 72 degrees F, a little humid for a winter day and slightly overcast. We are expecting very cold temperatures over the Christmas weekend. I wonder if that has anything to do with the bee activity? hummm

This morning we put out the sugar water pan and I couldn't believe how many bees showed up! Easily over a thousand. They drained the pan in no time at all and then their buzzing became very loud and they appeared a little agitated, movements were quick with a lot of buzzing around the sugar source.

My husband refilled their banquet table and within just a few minutes they calmed down and continued to feed til sundown, consuming all of the 1/2 gal of sugar mixture we provided today! Hungry little buggers. Around 9pm I went out to sit on my porch and hear buzzing! Looking around I found the source to be 3 bees buzzing around my green porchlight. What's up with that?

I assumed that bees would be safely back at their hive by dusk. Anyway, my husband located the wild hive today less than 200 yards away from my porch in the top of a dead oak tree. We always see them fly off in the same direction so he followed the direction and wah lah! I'm really enjoying this bee thing!

Bees Cleaning
by: Sootsy

Hi Barbara:

Enjoyed your article. During Thanksgiving week when hundreds of bees were coming to my backyard I often noticed some of them ganging up on individuals.

After watching closely I saw some had gotten the honey I put out on their bodies and the others were holding them down and cleaning them!

Porch Bees
by: Barbara

Thank you so much for your answer, I will make one of the feeding jars. A note-today I heard a buzz so loud in the house that I thought maybe a bee had made it's way inside. I went to the window and looked out at my sugar pan to see 500+ bees drinking from the pan!

I went outside and stood on the steps of my porch to watch them. They were flying all around me, but it didn't appear that they were bothered by my presence. Occasionally one would bump me on my head or neck, but not aggressively.

Last summer I watched one bee take charge of two hummingbird feeders hanging fairly close to one another. That one bee made life miserable for seven hummingbirds as he chased off the birds each time that they attempted to drink. Quite entertaining! I love watching the birds and the bees.

Thanks again for your quick response to my questions.
