My husband took care of bees and he passed away and I was wondering how much do I sell the colonies for? The bee hive is about 1 year old and great honey, the bees are very active.
I'm sorry to hear your husband passed away. I wonder whether you were ever told that when a beekeeper dies, someone must go and tell the bees, otherwise they will also perish. If you haven't already done this you might want to tell them as soon as possible.
I'm kidding of course, but there are many of these old wives tales and some of them appear to have a basis of truth.
As for the amount you should charge for the bees, it depends a lot on where you are in the country and the time of year. Prices tend to be higher in the spring than other times of the year.
If your husband was a member of a bee group or knew other beekeepers perhaps you could ask them what a fair price would be, and whether they know anyone who might be looking for hives.
If he wasn't a member of a club, I would suggest you try contacting a club nearby, they are sure to have a good idea of what the market price would be. In my experience beekeepers will be very helpful to you. Some associations have sales or auctions, especially in the spring, which would be an excellent place to sell a hive. Here is a link to our club pages. Select your state from the drop-down list and then pick one or two which are close to where you live.
