Honey Bee Cam
This is a live bee cam that views a bee colony which is currently sitting on my desk in an observation hive. I constructed a new observation hive, an Ulster Hive, which is basically a nuc box with a glass sided compartment which holds one frame. Ther is a plastic tube which allow the bees to leave in order to forage.
The Ulster hive has the advantage that it holds a total of five frames enabling the bees to happily exist in it for much longer periods. One of the frames canalso be removed and replaced with a frame feeder.
The camera was originally set up to view a swarm of bees which needed to be collected from a neighbor's pergola. The gardener had only noticed it a few days earlier.

I went to take a look and at first thought this was a large swarm, unusual even in San Diego for this time of year. On closer inspection I realized that these bees had decided they weren't going anywhere. I think they had been there for a good deal longer than a few days, probably a matter of 3 or 4 weeks, and were well on the way to establishing their colony in what is quite an exposed location.

The webcam is a Logitech C902, this is an indoor camera which is mounted to look through the window of the hive. It obviously only shows the bees during daylight hours, so if you only see a black screen you might check what the time is in California. I'm experimenting with an infra red LED light which may make viewing possible at night.
Thanks to Peter Skuse at Web Video for Dummies for all his help with this nature camera.
Bees shouldn't do this! This is not a good place for them, even if no one interferes with them. Do you have a bee story to share?
They might have trouble surviving the winter, such as it is in San Diego. The thing is, these bees haven't read the same books, they don't know they're not supposed to do this. Right-click on the image from the bee cam, you can display it full screen.
If you have trouble viewing the image, try deleting the browser cache. Press the Escape key to return to normal size image. It should work in most browsers if it doesn't, please let me know.
