Digger Bees, What to Do?
by: Anonymous

I have wooden ground level deck and the digger bees are going between the slats. I have killed about 35 (with chemical sprays) in the last few days.

At first they were digging in an adjacent garden plot but I put down a layer of mulch, they then proceeded to head for the spaces under the deck. I have no idea how many nests, swarms etc. might be under the deck and am a bit hesitant to take up some boards.

I am 99% sure they are digger bees by their conduct and appearance. I was told that spraying water between the cracks might help and I have done that twice with minimal success.

It would seem that making things wet and soggy would actually assist them in their digging activity???

[Unfortunately I know almost nothing about digger bees, but I think it's likely that what you're seeing is a lot of solitary bees rather than colonies.

I think if I was trying to get rid of them I would use copious amounts of soapy water sprayed repeatedly over the area. Soapy water will drown insects fairly quickly, but isn't persistent or poisonous like insecticide.
